Several events of this and next week concerning genealogy in Wood County, Texas:
5 p.m. — Optional “eating-meeting” at Peralta’s Mexican Restaurant in Quitman.
(1) The regular monthly meeting of the Wood County, Texas Genealogical Society next Monday (March 21) at 7 p.m. at the Quitman Public Library will feature voting on revisions of the Constitution and Bylaws. Those who might not have seen the previous notices of the voting may view the proposed revisions at this link: http://wcgs.posterous.com.
Prior to the 7 p.m. meetings our regular schedule is
6 p.m. — Members and guests may come to the Quitman Public Library for assistance with beginning their genealogy research or with working on brick walls or research resources.
(2) Our society played host to a group organizing a local historical organization this week at the library. Wood County residents including Busker Fannin and Rosalind Russell and others met with Larry Wade of Tyler who is organizing a Quitman/Wood County chapter of the African-American Historical Society. This group will be meeting every third Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. at a location to be announced. A portion of what they do in raising awareness of their cultural history in Wood County will include getting information from and about family members here and making that available to the public.
(3) The Holly Lake Genealogy Club is collecting five-generation pedigree charts and will be sharing them with the public in our Genealogy Research Room at the Quitman Public Library and at the Hawkins and Holly Lake public libraries. A resource pointed out at their meeting this week was FREE downloadable genealogy forms from the Midwest Genealogy Center at this link: http://www.mymcpl.org/genealogy/resources-genealogy-family-history.
(4) A new internet search engine that just looks at genealogy related sites came online this week at http://www.mocavo.com. You might want to give it a try. Member Ron Schell tried it and shared this remark: “I did a few quick searches and results looked impressive. I’m looking forward to checking this out a little more.”
