WCGS Year Kicks Off with Next Monday’s Covered Dish Dinner

There are only five more days until our September 2013-14 Kick-off Meeting Monday, Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. at the Quitman Public Library in the Shamburger Room. We will also hold one of our two yearly business meetings that evening.

It’s a covered dish meal greeting meeting like the last few years, and we would love to see you all. (Of course, we will not meet at Peralta’s before the meeting this month only.) If you would like to volunteer to provide drinks, plates, napkins, etc., please contact Hospitality Chairman Sally Allcorn, at rsalcrn@peoplescom.net or 903-967-3142.

Also, if you haven’t mailed in your 2013-14 membership dues ($25 a member no matter how many in a household), you can pay at the meeting Monday or still drop in the mail if you live too far away to attend Monday. The address is Treasurer, Wood County Genealogical Society, P. O. Box 832, Quitman, Texas 75783.

Dues Bylaw Changes Made at Semi-annual Business Meeting

An anticipation of increased general expenses as well as continuing of the Ancestrylibrary.com subscription for the Quitman Public Library were reasons offered leading to the adoption of a bylaws change of membership dues to $25 starting in September of the 2012-13 society year. Also, an additional charge for multiple family members was dropped from the dues structure. A single or multiple family members in the same home will be at the single rate of $25.

This took place at the March semi-annual business meeting, March 19. A report of a balance of $1,960.10 was made by Treasurer Wayne McCluney, and the minutes from the September business meeting were presented by Secretary Shirley Patrick and accepted. Both these reports are on the members’ only page which can be accessed from the link at the top right of this page.

In addition to the May trip to the Alba Public Library and Museum and to Parrott’s park in Lindale and the June trip to the Genealogy research room at the Dallas Public library (both of which are listed in more detail on previous posts to this page), the date of June 15 was named as the date for the society participation in the Highway 37 Garage Sale. The date will be confirmed and more on these events will be published here as available nearer to the time of the events.

It was also announced that the program for the April meeting of the society will be a presentation on the 1940 Census by Lisa McKinney of Edgewood.
