Publicity for tonight’s WCGSTX Meeting

McKinney to speak at WC Genealogical Society meeting Monday in Quitman

The Wood County Genealogical Society invites the public to hear guest speaker Lisa McKinney at the Quitman Public Library on Monday, April 16, at 7 p.m.
McKinney will explain what information is available for family researchers in the 1940 census and methods and sources to most effectively find that information.
As with all the regular monthly meetings of the Wood County Genealogical Society, members will be available at the library from 6-7 p.m. to help the public and other members with starting research of their ancestors and family tree or with research problems. A limited number of work stations will be available on a first-come, first serve basis to use the free library version of Ancestry.com. Personal Wi-Fi-enabled laptops may also be used.
Additionally, a social Dutch-treat gathering of society members and guests is open to anyone interested in genealogy on each third Monday meeting day at 5 p.m. at Peralta’s Mexican Food Restaurant in Quitman.

1940 Census Tips, Help Set for April 16 Meeting

Wood County Genealogical Society members and all others interested can learn the who-what-where-when-why-and-how of the 1940 census April 16 at 7 p.m. at the free public meeting of the society at the Shamburger Room of the Quitman Public Library.
The program will be presented by a distinguished veteran genealogist and member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, Lisa McKinney, of Edgewood.

In numerous speaking engagements this spring, McKinney has explained what information is available for family researchers in the 1940 census and methods and sources to most effectively find that information.
She is a former newspaper reporter and business editor who currently does freelance writing and editing and genealogical research for clients. She is an award-winning writer in the field of genealogy and as a fiction writer. She is a member of the Van Zandt County Genealogical Society where she works in the library, writes for society publications, and is the society’s public relations officer.

As for all the regular monthly meetings of the Wood County

1940 Census Rocks Genealogy World

Almost all the chatter in online genealogy circles this week has been about the release of images of the 1940 census. If you are interested, Ancestry.com, MyHeritage.com, and archives.gov have the images for free (and there are other sources for free also). That’s the good news.

The not-so-good news is that these sites are being bombarded with search requests and you might have trouble getting on. (Hint: what are you doing at 2 a.m.?) Also, not all states are loaded on all sites yet, and any indexes you might find are (1) not complete, (2) not there at all, or (3) hastily done (as in: will there be errors).

This should all calm down and get better in days to come.

If you live in or near Wood County, you will want to come to our April meeting when we will have a guest speaker all about the 1940 census.

1940 U.S. Census to be Free on Ancestry.com

PROVO, UTAH (August 17, 2011)- Ancestry.com, the world’s largest online family history resource, today announced that both the images and indexes to the 1940 U.S. Federal Census will be made free to search, browse, and explore in the United States when this important collection commences streaming onto the website in mid-April 2012.
When complete, more than 3.8 million original document images containing 130 million plus records will be available to search by more than 45 fields, including name, gender, race, street address, county and state, and parents’ places of birth. It will be Ancestry.com’s most comprehensively indexed set of historical records to date.
Ancestry.com is committing to make the 1940 Census free from release through to the end of 2013, and by doing so hopes to help more people get started exploring their family history. As this census will be the most recent to be made publicly available, it represents the best chance for those new to family history to make that all-important first discovery.
