Query: Old French Fort in Wood County

According to rumor there is an old french fort until about 1830 near Winnsboro.I am told it is on or near the old Billy Jack Attaway land. Near where the spring branch meets the Sabine. Fort La Dout but I’m not sure of the spelling. How do I find more on the fort and do you know anyone I can contact.

Does anyone associated with this website have information about a place called Billy Goat Hill near Quitman? I was told William G. Sawyer was buried there but cannot find any evidence of it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Help For A Non-resident of Texas

Requisitions and Acquisitions Co-chair Shirley Bates recently demonstrated the helpfulness of society members on a help request from an Illinois resident which was called into the Quitman Public Library. It turns out that the information was actually needed from Ector County, Texas. Here’s Shirley’s description of what she was able to do for the long-distance researcher:

“Rose Miltimore from Illinois called asking help in finding information about her daughter, Linda Styden, who had died March 24, 2012. She and the daughter were not on speaking terms but she wanted to get an obit or a death record or something. The daughter died in Odessa and Rose said it was probably her heart and she was probably cremated. …I called the long distance operator and was told that Midland was the county seat of Ector County and I was given the phone number of the County Clerk’s office. The lady I talked to said Ms. Miltimore needed to send a letter stating the full name of the deceased, the full name of the mother with maiden name, the full name of the father, the date of death, a picture identification of the person requesting this (Ms. Miltimore) and a money order for $21.00 to Vitals, P.O. Box 707, Odessa, Texas 79760.I think a lot of people would like to know that contacting the county clerk’s office might get more info than they know…”.

I am currently working on my family tree on the name of Hearon.

I am particularly trying to locate descendants of Charlie Hearon and Annie Warren Hearon. I am at a standstill trying to locate the cemetery where Annie Hearon was buried and when. I have found Charlie, Sr. already. My daddy, E. L. Hearon and Charlie Hearon were first cousins – their daddies were brothers. I am researching my husband’s family genealogy. (I am fairly new at this and would appreciate any tips or information you can share.)
I am trying to locate two of his ancestors: Joseph H Champion and Adison M Champion.
I have found both on the 1920 Census. They were residing in Hawkins, Wood Co TX. They were living with Jasper N Champion who was the head of household. This is the last piece of accurate information that I have on them. Joseph was my husbands’ great grandfather and Adison was his grand uncle. Joseph left Alabama amidst a family scandal and was never heard from again. My quest is to see where he passed and bring this closure to the family line. (The accusation that caused him to leave his family in Alabama was later recanted). Two of his sons, came
to TX hoping to find him and bring him back home to Alabama. Unfortunately, they were unable to locate him and returned to Alabama empty handed. If you have any information to help me on this quest; it would be appreciated.

I am searching for John William Hyde and Rosanna Morgan Hyde. They are listed on the 1880 US Federal Census in Wood County, TX. Their children were all born there. My Grandfather, Jefferson Davis Hyde and son of John William Hyde and Rosanna Morgan was the youngest child. I have been told that John William Hyde died before he was born and that his mother, Rosanna Morgan Hyde died when he and his sister Margaret were little.

I’m pretty sure that they lived in Quitman as that is what I have always heard but also have heard Rock Hill or Yantis. If he died before my Grandfather, Jefferson Davis Hyde was born that would have been in 1883 as Jefferson Davis Hyde was born January 21, 1884. Rosanna Morgan Hyde sometime after that.

I have searched all the records I know how to including the cemeteries that are online to no avail. I am hoping you can shed some light on this.

I am also searching for Ruth P. Hyde, first born of Jefferson Davis Hyde. She was born October 31, 1906 in Wood Co, TX She died in 1913. I have heard that she was buried in the cemetery in Yantis.

Seeking info./connections re: Green Russell Smith b. 1844 GA, and his wife, Mollie E. (Brown) and family. They were in Mineola and Golden, Wood County, TX beginning about 1870. Green was a County Commissioner and lived in the Bellefonte Community. His daughters married into the Davenport, Wood, Russell, & Bullard families.

John Butler, age 77, born in NC was listed in the 1860 Wood Co. TX mortality census. My 5th great-grandfather was a John Butler, born in 1782 in Sampson Co. NC. He moved with his wife & children to Dooly Co., GA where I last found him in the 1850 census. I found three of “my” John Butler’s sons in Wood Co. on the 1860 census, Adam, Robert, and Phillip R. so I am pretty sure of the connection. I would like to know where John is buried and if his wife Lucy is buried there also. I did not find a listing for her in the 1860 census.
