Plans were announced for a November evening workshop which will be held on a different night than the regular November meeting. Details will be shared here on the Bulletin when exact dates are determined. The emphasis will be on using local and online resources to help people with their family research.

Fourteen people attended the  covered-dish dinner including four guests who shared their research and family history with those present. Also, minutes for meetings in April, May, and June as well as an up-to-date financial report were presented by Secretary Shirley Patrick and Treasurer Wayne McCluney. Also, if you haven’t mailed in your 2012-13 membership fee ($25 a member no matter how many in a household), you can pay at the meeting Monday or still drop in the mail if you live too far away to attend Monday. Recognition of Service, Plans for 2012-13

Three goals for the 2012-13 year and the unveiling of plaques to honor lifetime members and distinguished members of the Wood County Texas Genealogical Society were announced at a special June meeting this week.

Goals announced by President Ronnie Vance are  (1) more programs on county history including but not limited to community histories and member presentations on their families from those areas, (2) more service to researchers using resources of the Genealogical Research Room at the Quitman Public Library and to help community members with their genealogical research, and (3) involving more members in those help activities including how to help researchers and resources available in the local library including some staffing possibilities with volunteer members.

Three members present receiving awards for service at the June meeting were Dorothy Harbin, Deason Hunt, and Mark Reid

President Vance displayed plaques to members and recognized new honorees. The award for Lifetime Member was made to Mark Reid, past president and vice-president as well as webmaster, researcher, and author of articles for society publications. Lots of Important WCGS Activities in the Next 7 Days

June is “bustin’ out all over” for area members of the Wood County, Texas Genealogical Society (WCGS) in the four-day period of this next weekend and Monday. Your participation is requested and needed at both MAJOR events.

1. A fundraiser garage sale to gather money for activities such as the next year’s subscription (at the Quitman Public Library) for Ancestry.com is Friday and Saturday, June 15-16 on the sidewalk in front of the library for the Highway 37 Garage Sale. We need (a) volunteers to set up starting at 8 a.m. and to work, visit, and have fun during the day (all or some of the time), (b) donations for the sale which you can bring with you or drop off or call a local member to pickup prior to Friday. (You can call Deason at 903-769-0792, email to wcgstx@gmail.com starting as soon as you see this if you need a donation pickup. He will call on others to help with the pickup).

2. A very special Everyone-Needs-ToAttend meeting of the Wood County Genealogical Society Monday evening, June 18, at the library starting at 6 p.m. with a social time with refreshments and a special To-Be-Revealed program (Don’t you just love a mystery?) which needs the attendance of all area members possible. Please make a special effort to attend. Also, no Peralta’s gathering before the meeting this time only.

You can expect multiple and more reminders this week. This is a special event! We need a  big turnout.

Special things are happening for the WCGS this week. Please help make it even more special by your attendance.
