Family Research Donated to Society

Family researcher Annettee Reed has donated to the Genealogy Research Room of the Wood County Genealogical Society her extensive research on the Kirkpatrick, Minshew, and Ellison families, all early-day through present residents of Wood county. This also includes documents and pictures. The materials are in our processing area at the Quitman Public Library and will be evaluated for the best way to make them available to other researchers when they come to the library. Thanks to Annette for trusting us with her family research.

The society accepts donations of research and research materials. You can contact us by mail at P.O. Box 832, Quitman, Texas 75783 or by email at wcgstx@gmail.com to inquire or make arrangements to preserve such materials. Society staff will make determinations of best use and display and disposal of the materials based on how they fit our research collection. When other libraries, museums, or repositories seem more appropriate, we will make decisions whether or not to offer to pass them on to those organziations.

Donation of Microfiche/microfilm Reader

The society has received a donation of a microfiche/microfilm reader and census microfilm from Helen Arnold of Yantis. The reader is the advanced model of the 770A and has manual reels for reading regular 35mm microfilm as well as fiche. Included was 19 rolls of census film from the states of Mississippi, Tennessee, and North Carolina.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to Mrs. Arnold for the donation of these resources. They are available to use in the Genealogy Research Room for members and the general public.

Donation in Honor of Gertrude Banks

The society recently received a $20.00 donation in honor of Gertrude Banks from the Elizabeth Denton Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Ms. Banks was the speaker at the March meeting of that DAR chapter and asked that her speaker fee be donated to our genealogical society.

Thanks both to Ms. Banks and to the Elizabeth Denton Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

‘Jet Set’ Book to Genealogical Research Center

One of our new members presented the society for its genealogical research center the second record book/scrapbook of the Jet Set for safe keeping at the March 2010 meeting.

Barbara COLEMAN said that the first book had been lost, and she was donating this one so the record would be preserved.

The Jet Set was a group of Wood County ladies who came together for games and fellowship. The organization no longer meets.

Thanks to Barbara and the Jet Setters for sharing this document which will prove valuable to some researchers some day.

Ya’ll: Our Other Donors

In saying thank you to our donors, we forgot to mention those who contribute out-of-pocket money for resources, programs, etc. which don’t pass through our accounts as bank deposits but which enrich the experiences we offer to members and the general public.

We are also remiss if we don’t mention the value of the time and energy devoted to society projects and meetings by various members. One of those we often fail to mention is the value members bring just by showing up for meetings and special work sessions. We are a true volunteer organization, and our work is made enjoyable and valuable by all the contributions of time, effort, money, and membership. We all contribute in the ways which are appropriate for us as individual members.

Thanks ya’ll!

Our $$$ Donors

Thanks to all members and non-members who have made monetary donations to the society since July or 2009. They are
Wayne Childers
Dorothy Harbin
K. N. Humphreys
Fred Kramer
David Pedry
Dianne Pierce
Ron Schell
Ronnie & Nan Vance.

Some of these donated in gratitude for research work we did for them, and some members donated for various reasons many adding an additional amount to their renewal of dues for the year. Their generosity helps us fund parts of our program by helping meet our budget goals for the year.
