Jack King Seale and His Dogs

President Ronnive Vance submitted these photos of Wood County tombstones. Do you have any interesting tombstones in the county to share?

Reverting back to old practices, Jack King Seale chose to be buried on his property along CR 3235 between Lake Lydia and Concord Cemetery located on FM 778. Also buried with Jack are two of his dogs, Heidi and Hecter. Their gravesites are also marked. Not long after Jack passed and the dogs were also buried, his wife sold the house and land, including the grave site, and returned to her family in the Carolinas. Another unusual twist is that Jack’s gravestone is facing north instead of the customary east facing stone.

Shamburger Cemetery Information

This is a post that came as a comment on the cemetery Query: http://woodtxgene.com/2011/11/09/query-private-cemetery-in-wood-county/. I thought I would make it a separate post for more visibility. It could probably use some followup to get all the names and dates by some member near the cemetery.(the editor)

Joseph Artie Coston Civil War Service

Member Joe Coston submitted the following as a comment on the “Correction on John T. Potter Burial Site Dedication” post. It was decided it should also be shared as its on post as it provides interesting information about his ancestor Joseph Coston.

My great-grandfather, Joseph Artie Coston, who was a Confederate veteran (and a union veteran) is also buried at Shady Grove. His grave is in the far left corner of the cemetery and is (or was 15 years or so ago) marked with a Confederate veteran marker.

Joseph Artie Coston was born in Alabama, probably near Mt. Andrew in Barbour County but possibly in
Bibb County, on 5 January 1841. followed the example of his father and became a farmer. He
married Jemima Voorhees about 25 October 1867.

He joined Company K, 29th Alabama Infantry Regiment Confederate service at Clayton, Alabama immediately before the 10th of March 1862.

Confederate records show that Joseph A. Coston was reported as “missing” on a list of casualties and Federal records indicate that he was captured at Nashville on 15 December 1864. He was sent to the military prison at Camp Douglas (now in Chicago), Illinois on 20 December 1864.

On 1 April 1865, while still incarcerated at Camp Douglas, Joseph joined other prisoners who swore allegiance to the United States Government and enlisted in Company F, 5th U. S. Volunteer Infantry for three years with the understanding that they would serve on the western frontier. His service records indicate that he served as a private soldier until he was mustered out on 15 October 1866 at Fort Kearny, Nebraska Territory.

Coston family oral history related that Joseph Artie was a year and a half later than the rest of the Confederate soldiers in returning from the Civil War but did not provide a reason for hid tardiness except that ‘he had been in a Yankee prison camp.’ It is possible that he told no one of this adventure. His grandson, Ocie Coston, did not know that he had enlisted in the U. S. Army, and there is no evidence that any of his descendants were aware of this fact.

Joseph and his family moved to the Stout community in Wood County, Texas sometime between 1888 and 1900 where they resumed farming. Jemima died on 13 January 1919 and Joseph died on 17 January 1934 at the age of 93. Both are buried in Shady Grove.

William Bluford Davis Cemetery Marker

I AM SO VERY HAPPY TODAY!!! I had received a copy of my gr.grandfather and gr.grandmother’s cemetery markers but had never been able to find them in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, in Wood Co, TX. Well, today, I FOUND THEM.
W. B. Davis, was a CSA veteran, therefore, since I have found it, it won’t be necessary for me to request a replacement marker, however, there are no dates, any suggestions as to how I may get the dates attached to the marker.

John Potter Dedication in August

Through the efforts of member Violet Shirey of Rockport, there will be a commemoration of the Civil War service of veteran John T. Potter August 14 at the Shady Grove Cemetery at Winnsboro. Violet has written with several requests for assistance concerning John Potter and family.
1) She is wondering if there is any member has “any ideas what a memorial program would contain.”
2) “I am looking for Kathryn Browning. She is a g granddaughter of John T. Potter. I don’t know what her married name is, but the last I knew of her she lived in Quitman. Her parents were Ambrose and Sis Browning. They are buried in the cemetery just North of Mineola. Is there any way to locate her?”
3) “Also is there a map in your possesion that would show where John T. Potter lived? He lived in Pct 4, Wood Co.”

John Potter of Wood County

We have received the following email from member Violet Shirey:

John T. Potter was in the Civil War and is buried at Shady Grove, Winnsboro.

His tombstone does not show he was in the war. Is there any way we can get a medalion or whatever it is they put on tombstones? Will appreciate your help.

I am mailing your information on the Decendants of John T. Potter and information about his millitary record. (Note: We will publish this in the online bulletin and then the newsletter upon receipt. dh)

He was my daughter’s (Linda S. Shirey’s) g g g grandfather.

Rock Hill and Holly Tree Cemeteries

The Rock Hill (Quitman) and Holly Tree (Holly Lake Ranch) cemeteries have been recently surveyed and booklets placed on the shelf in the cemetery area of the Wood County research resources in the genealogy library. Member Ronnie Vance performed the surveys and prepared the booklets and gave them to the library.

Rock Hill Cemetery is in Central Wood County near Quitman and on County Road 1477 about 6/10ths of a mile east of the intersection of FM 515 and FM 2966. Death dates on tombstones indicated by the survey range from 1867 to 2009.

Holly Tree Cemetery is next to Holly Tree Chapel in the Holly Lake community in eastern Wood County on FM 2869 about 1/2 mile south of FM 14. Death dates on tembstones in the survey range from 1979 to 2009.
