Austin University student and historian Noris White Jr., is searching for primary documents and related evidence of slaves and free black men or women who may have served in the Confederate armies as combat infantrymen, wagoneers, servants, and in other capacities either by choice or otherwise for a book he is researching. Arkansas Central Library in Little Rock has set of book containing all records from Union and Confederates. This is a large, large set.
Arkansas and some of the other southern states have extensive collection if the war was fought in their state. You also might check with the Texas State archives.
