Some Handy Research Links

New FREE research links were brought to the group at the April meeting by Vice-president Dorothy Harbin.

At the GLO link, land records and homesteading grants are displayed with information about location and individual for those in land grant states.

Dorothy also shared a link in which she was able to download a copy of separation papers for an individual. While unable to find that exact link at WWW.archives.gov, you can find others such as enlistment papers whose search page is at this link: http://aad.archives.gov/aad/fielded-search.jsp?dt=893&tf=F&cat=TS13&bc=,sl

March Minutes & March/April Treasurer’s Report Posted

Minutes of the March 2011 meeting and the March/April Treasurer’s Report have been posted on the member-only page.

Allen Brings Back Song Memories

Pat Allen of Mineola entertained and took members of the society and guests back many years in our memories with banjo and fiddle songs which would have been familiar to our parents and grandparents and other early settlers.

Pat Allen shared "old timey" music

Members of the audience could be seen tapping their toes in rhythm to the old familiar tunes as Pat explained the role that “making their own” entertainment played in the lives of folks before we had all the electronic gadgets of the 20th and 21st centuries.

A survey of members was taken at the meeting to see who would be interested in computer lessons starting at the regular meeting times in June, July, and August as well as an interest survey of which jobs members might like to do in helping the society meet its goals in the 2011-2012 society year. Payment for room use in the summer months was also approved at the meeting. Details concerning both the surveys will be compiled and shared in the coming months.

It was also announced that to accommodate the meeting plans of the Retired Teachers Association on our meeting night in May, the fun meeting at Peralta’s would be moved that one time only to 5:30 at Peralta’s. The 6 p.m. research help session at the library will be cancelled that day, and the regular meeting will begin at 7 p.m. as usual.

Query: Norris

My aunt, Norma Louise [Anderson] NORRIS, died in Quitman, Wood County, Texas on 7 Jun 1977.

Do you have any suggestion on where I might be able to obtain a copy of her obit? The local library? I appreciate your assistance.

John Potter of Wood County

We have received the following email from member Violet Shirey:

John T. Potter was in the Civil War and is buried at Shady Grove, Winnsboro.

His tombstone does not show he was in the war. Is there any way we can get a medalion or whatever it is they put on tombstones? Will appreciate your help.

I am mailing your information on the Decendants of John T. Potter and information about his millitary record. (Note: We will publish this in the online bulletin and then the newsletter upon receipt. dh)

He was my daughter’s (Linda S. Shirey’s) g g g grandfather.
